The Russian Revolution Centenary: The Contemporary Significance of the Events that Changed World History (IYSSE at UCSD)

October 30 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This year marks the centenary of the world-historic events of 1917, which began with the February Revolution in Russia and culminated in October with “ten days that shook the world”—the conquest of political power by the Bolshevik Party under the leadership of Lenin and Trotsky.

One hundred years later, the Russian Revolution retains a burning contemporary relevance. All the great issues that motivated that revolutionary struggle — imperialist violence, social inequality, political repression—are present today. The danger of world war, the rise of far-right fascistic movements, the intolerable conditions facing billions of young people—all raise the urgent need for a study of the lessons and experiences of the Russian Revolution.

David North, chairman of the International Editorial Board of the World Socialist Web Site, will review the causes, consequences and enduring significance of the 1917 Russian Revolution. North has been a leading figure in the international socialist movement for more than four decades. He is national chairman of the Socialist Equality Party (US) and author of numerous works, including In Defense of Leon Trotsky, The Russian Revolution and the Unfinished 20th Century, and A Quarter Century of War: The US Drive for Global Hegemony, 1991-2016.
